The students in my classroom have yet to experience a school year without pandemic guidelines and procedures. Their school routine has been different from day to day, and some days, their schedule has changed mid-day. Students' social, emotional, and mental well-being has been an important factor when creating lessons and activities this year. I am having to make changes to our methods of learning and make choices that best support my students' mental health during this time of pandemic-impacted teaching.
Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make choices that work best for them. With this project, during independent work times, students will be able to choose a seat in the classroom that works for them. Currently, my students have a very limited amount of flexible seating to choose from in our room. The products that I have selected such as wobble chairs, cushions, and stability balls will help my students, by giving them additional seating options. The tables I have selected will provide organization, as well as variety, with their adjustable heights.
Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit. They are more focused and get more work completed when utilizing flexible seating, as opposed to sitting at their desks. My students are also noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given a choice of where to work. I have seen how these choices can positively affect my students' work and demeanor, and I hope that the additional options will help us grow even more!
