My students are obsessed with art. They get legitimately angry when I tell them they can't get drawing paper between assignments. I have a few students that struggle with their emotions and anxiety. Drawing and art gives them an opportunity to decompress and process their thoughts. Personally, I understand the benefits of using art to help your mental health, so I try to give my students opportunities to use this. With these materials I want to offer ways of self-regulation to my students so they can be successful. Whether it's in the heat of the moment and they need a relief, or they need a helper during work time, I want to be able to give it to them. There are many ways we as adults regulate ourselves and we don't even know it: a heavy blanket, pacing, twitching, doodling. Kids should be able to do these things too! We can't sit at our desks all day long! I want to give my students the opportunity to express themselves through art and teach so they can understand their emotions. I am also asking for books to help students understand their emotions. The goal would be to read a book and think about real world example. I would encourage them to make good choices in these situations. Then we could also apply it to an art project, using art to process our emotions. I am asking for books to learn about social emotional topics, and other things to help with self regulation. I am also asking for art supplies that can be used for years to come.
