Our district has a high percentage of Hispanic ELL students, as well as low income students, who really struggle to receive help at home from their parents with their schooling during virtual instruction. Many of the students begin the school year significantly behind on their reading skills. To help my students close the gap with their reading skills amid the pandemic, I could use flexible classroom seating and finger flashlights to encourage students to enjoy reading by providing them with a cozy seat and an engaging atmosphere to promote reading. The "Light Up Literacy" project would involve the following routine: One day per week I will allow the students to pick flexible seating and turn off the classroom lights and allow the students to read using the light from their finger flashlights. This activity will help inspire students to desire to read by showing them that reading can be fun and relaxing! This activity will help increase the amount of time that students are reading; ultimately improving their reading fluency & comprehension.
