To help my students learn amid the pandemic, I will use glockenspiels in the classroom. These instruments will help expand my students’ opportunities to play an instrument both independently and as a class in turn. The glockenspiels will allow my students to get experience with playing instruments that are pitched rather than classroom percussion instruments (such as rhythm sticks, egg shakers, and tambourines). Glockenspiels are an ideal instrument for the early childhood student as it enhances hand eye coordination and sequencing. Having several instruments will make it so each student has more opportunity to play, and will help with sharing materials and social distancing in light of COVID-19. Investing in these instruments serves as a solid foundation for my music program. Performances across all levels were halted due to of COVID-19, but these instruments will give students experience in performing in class. Building self esteem, improving cognitive function, expansion of vocabulary through music, and focusing on development of motor skills will greatly benefit the students in the homeroom as well. We also want students to have freedom of self expression and feel a sense of creativity. Investing in this program early in education not only helps build a stronger music program overall, but also develops the whole student as they learn music literacy, social-emotional skills, and creativity.
