Flexible seating is very beneficial for many students, especially young 5- and 6-year-olds who struggle sitting still. Flexible seating allows students to wobble, rock, bounce, stand, lean, kneel, or stand which increases oxygen and blood flow to the brain. My students need to move and keep their minds alert and primed for learning. I am requesting tables and flexible seating options. The pandemic has made it hard for these students to have a normal social life which is so important in these young years of life. It has also put restrictions on our circle time, but with flexible seating, the students can still be comfortable and interactive with our lessons. An uncomfortable student is a distracted student and flexible seating are much more comfortable for students than a hard chair. Also, they love being able to communicate and share with their neighbors with tables so they could have better discussions without interrupting the whole class. I like to do turn and talk discussions which get all the students involved in answering questions. The pandemic has stifled social skills and communication at this age level, therefore, the use of flexible seating will encourage and engage students in interacting with each other and effective communication will grow.
