For students today, the effects of COVID-19 are abundant -- high school students are expected to navigate busy schedules while knowing that, at any moment, their plans could be pulled out from under them. I witness this tension on a daily basis -- I can always count on their tapping fingers and furrowed eyebrows. Suffice it to say, anxiety is abundant. These students need a classroom that is sufficient in its capabilities of provision and safety. When anxieties are calmed, focus is attainable -- and focus is that magical place where learning comes into play. My classroom needs tools that promote calm and thus aid focus in students. I’m taking a holistic approach to the tools needed to provide calm and focus, the goal being to provide for the unique needs of students individually and for the classroom as a whole. Fidget toys and under-the-desk bouncy bands help settle the body, while stickers and candies provide those small rewards that boost motivation. A printer allows me to quickly and easily print essential instructional materials. Other supplies that benefit the classroom environment include things like snacks for hungry students, organization, tissues, non-fluorescent lighting, and music playing during times of independent study. All of these tools work together in creating a peaceful, focused classroom. As a result of this project, I expect to see some shifts from anxiety to focus. A student’s well being and ability to learn is contingent on many factors, some of which are the comfort of knowing every need can be met -- that, no matter how unpredictable life may become, we are fully invested in their education and their well being. If we can offer just some of that support by providing a peaceful, focused environment, I want to make every effort to do so.
