My students are eager to learn, but in order to do so, they need the basics to be able to access materials that "typical students" do. The right furniture is able to support their needs. Due to the type of program that I am in, my students have very high needs in order for them to access curriculum and learning in general. The first issue and the biggest need within my classroom is access to alternate seating. If the furniture does not accommodate their needs, there is no way they are able to learn. Structured seating allows students the stability and strength to access learning in all aspects of the classroom: the rug, table, play centers, etc. The students in my classroom have a range of physical needs that does not allow them to use typical classroom chairs. Some of my students require more structured chairs to be able to access the table and the rug. The chairs I am raising money for are more upright and rigid. They are less likely to tip over like plastic chairs. Additionally, they have sides that give the students a boundary. My students are not entirely aware of their body in space, therefore, it is common for students to tip chairs, fall out of them, and miss them completely without that boundary. Our school supplies plastic chairs for my classroom, but these are not enough for my high needs students to be able to access settings within the classroom.
