Due to the pandemic, my students have had to spend an extraordinary amount of time out of school and at home where many of them have little to no art supplies. Not only have they not been exposed to art at home, this is the first year the school has ever had an art program. It is my wish for them that they be exposed to and get to explore as many styles of art as possible. One way I want to do this is through a "Heart Art" project in which all my students are able to study numerous artists and their styles of work and choose which one interests them the most and create a heart in similar fashion. We will then decorate the halls with these hearts to show the love we have for each other in our school. My goal is to help my students not only learn about different artists while exploring new mediums but to feel empowered and embrace their individuality. Too often children, especially after living through a pandemic or other trauma, are left feeling powerless. My wish is for this project to be a chance for them to have control to choose something for themselves. Besides choosing an artist to explore, I hope to offer a wide selection of supplies they can select from to create their masterpieces. As students walk the halls, these hearts will stand out to them as not only a representation that they are loved and cared about but they can also observe that the cohesive collection of hearts are much like our school. Made up of individual pieces that each look a little different and created in its own distinctive way yet uniquely beautiful.
