Avid is a college and career prep course that focuses on skills such as Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading/Research. Many students I teach are potential first-generation college students. These students are not aware and have not been exposed to the many different colleges in the state of Oklahoma as well as the surrounding areas and HBCU's available for them to attend. Seeing potential future schools around the classroom everyday helps students to continue to strive for their goals and aspirations and that they can attend one of these colleges and universities. Many students come to school everyday lethargic and disinterested due to hunger. I have students every hour asking for snacks and water because they did not get to eat breakfast or lunch. It is very difficult to focus on learning and getting your education when your stomach continues to growl. The snacks that you'll provide will help my students stay focused on their academics and improve their learning environment. This will brighten many kids' moods just eating something they actually enjoy and drinking water instead of juice or pop for a change. Avid is an elective that allows our class to do many group activities. We have #FunFriday every other Friday where we can play many fun games and team-building activities. All games tie into a lesson and works on Collaboration with others. This skill is vital to succeed no only in college but in their careers as well. The games are fun and many teach them to critically think and work and communicate together, display leadership skills, and following instructions.
