These engaging, independent, educational activities will aid my Kindergarteners in learning letters, sounds, one-to-one correspondence, counting, teamwork, communication, increasing finger strength, and so much more. Close your eyes and imagine my room: A huddle of children using a toy drill and screws or tweezers and colored pegs to create works of art. Another group chooses between matching letters, making or reading words with bright letter tiles, and magnetic letters. In the back of the room, children are on the carpet with a pillow, writing capital and lowercase letters on a new magnetic writing surface. At the white table, with yellow, blue, green, and pink chairs, students find rhyming words or rocket parts beginning with a specific sound to complete the alphabet rocket. That low buzzing hum is what I call high-interest, self-motivated learning. While the low-hum of learning is buzzing, I work with students one-on-one or in small groups to reinforce or extend individual needs. The afternoon will have the same learning buzz while focusing on math skills. With these materials, all my Kindergarten classes will stay engaged and motivated, feel pride in their accomplishments, and develop a love for learning! What a blessing to allow my students to learn about letters, sounds, reading, writing, counting, sharing, communicating, cooperating, developing fine motor skills, creating friendships, and having FUN doing it! Can you hear that? It's our Kindergarten class engaged in learning!
