A safe space to learn and grow in a world of uncertainty and fear is the least I can give my young students. I want my students to feel physically, emotionally, and cognitively comfortable and safe in my classroom. Providing my students with flexible seating and writing materials can help foster our classroom community. When a student starts their day with choices that directly impact their environment, they take ownership of their environment and learning. I have slowly implemented flexible seating for the last few years, mostly DIY choices, and have seen a positive impact it has made on my students. After the last few years of switching between home and school, I would like to combine the two environments to encourage engagement and focus. With the ability to wobble, swaddle and move, students can get their wiggles out while staying focused. Having reusable notepads, my students can choose to vocalize or show their understanding of instruction in real time with no mess or frustration. Having these materials in the classroom will ensure that the transition between home and brick-and-mortar schooling is smooth and painless.
