Due to Covid, my students have not had the opportunity to learn about people, cultures, traditions, and backgrounds outside of their own homes and circumstances. The items in this project will inspire the rest of our globally and culturally conscious studies this year (and beyond). There are lots of reference books to inspire curiosity and creative thinking and diverse and multicultural picture books to enhance our understanding of people around our school, state, country, and world that both do and do not look like us. There’s nothing quite like seeing a child find his or herself represented in a book for the very first time, and we’ve had at least three of those unique experiences so far this year! I have also included crafting supplies. Every day I have students ask to use skin color supplies, and these will help us create self-portraits of all kinds throughout the rest of this year. It is amazing to see the creativity of my students in creating art that truly reflects who they are and how they see themselves through their own eyes. The coloring supplies are used daily in our writing journals, and the tissue paper has been amazing for paper plate portraits! We use the construction paper for larger crafts, and the kids love finding their personal colors!
