Our students have a wide range of learning needs, but all of them like interacting with books. Unfortunately most of the books we have in our classroom contain words that our students do not know how to read. We are requesting books that are phonics based and controlled vocabulary so our students can actually hold a book and experience the satisfaction of actually reading! I selected some very early readers (Bob books) for the students who our emerging readers while the chapter books are for the older students who really want to read big kid books. We have reading groups in our class and when students are not in a reading group, they can read some of these books at their desks. Then when it is time for reading groups, they can bring their books to our group so we can discuss what they are reading, review sounds and words, and even write about the stories.
