The iPad will be connected to the sound system in our gym and will provide age-appropriate music to which students can participate in free movements such as dancing and controlled movement through dance games and station rotation signaling. Tik Tok type dancing is very popular among students. As an SEL activity, students will get in teams and create their own dance, use the iPad and tripod to video it, and then it will be shared with other classes to learn. The balls and tape will be used for an activity in identifying ways to cope with emotions. Posters will be hung around the gym with different coping skills such as exercise, listening to music, talking to a friend or adult, breathing techniques, naming things you are grateful for, etc. The balls will be labeled with emotions such as sad, mad, happy, anxious, scared, etc. The tape will be used to create boxes around the room close to each poster. Team members (red, white, and black) will meet together to discuss each emotion on the balls and what coping skills would be best. Then each person will go to a "tape box" and the team will pass the balls to their teammates to get them to the correct poster.
When students learn to work as a team, problem-solve, and set goals while also learning how to release all kinds of emotions through movement and play they have a foundation for success no matter what they want to do in life. In my PE classes, we give students the opportunity to learn all of these skills while also providing support and a helping hand when they are in need. With good physical activity habits and strong social-emotional coping skills, we will develop healthy, happy, and confident kids!
