These percussion instruments and other percussion equipment will be used to greatly enhance the learning ability of the current and future percussionists and improve the performance of the entire concert band. Currently, we are using equipment and drums that are broken, with limited choices of sticks and mallets, to generate the different types of sounds required by contemporary music. Without working percussion equipment, the students are unable to fully experience being a successful percussionist.
These instruments and equipment will open a whole new world of music making possibilities for our percussion student in percussion ensembles and concert band and teach them correct practices they can use to audition for honor ensembles. This includes modern music by living composers the students can interact with and music from a variety of cultures around the world so we can become more culturally aware, global citizens. Most of the students in the school are from low income households, and for many, due to the pandemic, they are not able to afford to purchase any equipment for themselves. This can help bridge the equity divide between our band program and those from more affluent areas.
It is proven that music learning can help students’ emotional well-being and growth. Also, students who are engaged in activities are more academically involved and successful. Involvement in a music program is largely determined by a students’ level or enjoyment and self-efficacy. For many students, it is not enjoyable to play on sub-par or damaged equipment. This leads to students leaving the organization, in which the whole organization suffers, and the student misses out on opportunities and experiences that promote personal growth, social awareness and emotional development. Considering our social situation due to the pandemic, students need these opportunities now more than ever.
