Science, as described in the Oklahoma Academic Standards (OAS), is a, “process of using observations” to gain an understanding of the “physical and natural world.” During the pandemic, students have missed opportunities of instruction in science that includes planning out and making observations of specimens in the physical world. Additionally, it is written that, “it is not enough for students to read about science; they must do science.” (OAS) The OAS authors hit the nail on the head regarding observations. In my classroom, plans are underway for the students to “do science.” They will have opportunities to record observations of physical properties of many types of specimens, including such items as seeds and insects to magnifying images of everyday things, such as light emitting diodes (LED) or even the surface of their own skin. This grant will provide two student stereo microscopes, taking the student from a mere spectator of the scientific world to becoming an interactive participant. There is something special that happens when students of all ages observe the world in a magnified view. When magnified, even the simplest of things, like everyday dust, creates a spark and curiosity that can take a student to a whole new level of understanding. I am very grateful for this opportunity and thank you in advance for your consideration.
