To fill in COVID math gaps, my 6th graders need some hands-on materials. They are familiar with these base ten blocks from 2nd grade, but revisiting them again in 5th and 6th helps them learn decimal place values and fractions. Instead of the 100s block being 100, it's one; then the sticks are tenths and the smallest blocks are hundredths. They learn place value so quickly when they model the decimal numbers with these blocks. Learning fractions, decimal multiplication, and decimal division are a cinch with these blocks. They can make and divide groups, regroup and more. The large set helps me model on the board and the totes help me keep everything neat.
