COVID-19 is creating new challenges for students, such as new levels of anxious behaviors. Anxious behaviors can productively be calmed by using their hands and brains in new ways to reduce the hyper focus on what cannot be changed in their world. As a small rural school we have opportunities to individually work with students while their peers are engaged in activities, these items will keep all students productive and engaged in classroom activities. Eager and energetic students need productive ways to use their energy in the classroom. Providing new activities and handheld age appropriate optical illusions and fidget toys that take collaboration to finish will also increase healthy communication skills. I want my students to be able to move when they need to without negative consequences, so I teach them how to move quietly, which I believe teaches them better study habits as they can stay on task. I have added my own fidget and moldable magnet art to my classroom but I do not have enough for all of the students. This project would allow all of my counseling and classroom students to have a productive way to move. Paper and ink will be an important addition to our classroom so students can continue to print and display their projects for their peers to see. Projects include pixel art, newsletters, blog entries, and website designs. The moving art pieces are for students to enjoy when they are finished with projects allowing thought provoking movement without being disruptive to students still working. The levitating moon provides thought provoking design and conversation in their classroom. Also the levitating moon lamp goes along with a lesson discussing how NASA uses technology through (antennas) to communicate with far away space craft. We also discuss space careers and the way computers are used.
