As a school counselor, it is my job to support the social, emotional, academic and career needs of the 400+ students I'm responsible for. Based on the various socioeconomic and personal challenges our students face, they often lack basic resources, such as hygiene products, and especially food.
I have approximately 50 students ask me for a snack every day, and I utilize every snack I give out as an opportunity to check in with each student, and gauge how they are doing. This is often a key to building counseling/therapeutic rapport with students I do not yet have a relationship with, and helps me learn more about each student's situation. Additionally, this provides me with the opportunity to continue to work with students in order to get them the resources that they need to be successful both in and out of school.
Overall, healthy snacks, such as the ones I provide in my office, have been shown to benefit children and teens by helping them maintain energy levels, curb hunger, and provide proper nutrients to assist their development. Healthy snacks also help students stay focused in school. Additionally, snacks assist students by supporting them them in regulating their emotions, lowering anxiety, boosting overall mood, as well as decreasing emotional distress. Finally, healthy snacks have been credited for improving overall behavior and academic performance.
I have been funding the snacks I have been providing to the students, and am looking forward to the possibility of financial assistance.
