For this project I have picked out four graphic novels with a high interest level all surrounding the idea of middle school. I want to jump into reading right away at the beginning of the year, and by using graphic novels it’ll engage students in reading without feeling like I’m having them jump head first into a huge novel. It will also be a wonderful way for students to engage with one another, and be a part of each other’s learning process which is something that has been hard since Covid. By doing this I hope to get students desire for reading higher and encourage them by giving them an engaging novel that is attainable to finish within a short amount of time. I am giving students four different options, so that they have a choice. We will be reading these graphic novels in book groups in class. We will still be doing whole class learning together. Since all of these books surround on one main idea of middle school we will be able to talk about main idea, theme, plot, and some text evidence together while still maintaining student choice about what they are reading. I want my students to feel confident in their abilities to learn these skills, but also be able to have choice in what they are reading in class. I want this to be a positive experience with reading, so that they begin to make book choices for themselves outside of the book groups as well. It will work as a great start to our year engaging students in reading, major state standards, classroom unity, and allowing me a chance to get to know my students through their reading and writing.
