Motivation is key for learning. When students get to interact with what they are learning about, they are more likely to remember the lesson and key concept. Our upcoming unit is focusing on magnets and magnetism, having these supplies will allow for more engaging, and barrier breaking, lessons. They will be used to help students gain the opportunity to take what they are learning and test it themselves, instead of just watching me through a camera. Hands-on experiences are invaluable when it comes to student growth and learning, especially in science. In my school, around 80% of the student population is Hispanic, and for many, English is not their first language. This often creates a barrier between myself and the students which hands-on learning helps to break down. Instead of just talking at students, the ability to let students test theories by experimenting with guiding questions allows all students to learn. Regardless of spoken language. By being able to demonstrate both what I am teaching and (for students) what they are learning, science can become a common language for both of us.
