Graphic novels draw kids to reading much like fish are attracted by a juicy worm! I have seen students who refuse to read become engrossed in graphic novels and not want to put them down. These same students soon graduate from graphic novels to other good literature because they have seen the power of a great story. It has been difficult this year to provide those students with the graphic novel stepping block in my classroom since I have none. The gift of these books would help my students immensely. The COVID epidemic has unfortunately caused a great setback in student reading skills and also in their ability to feel able in the world and emotionally solid. Most of my students are below grade level in reading; up to one-third of them are scoring more than three grades below. The 23 graphic novels and the two class novel sets will help close that gap. The novel The Devil's Arithmetic will help them realize that it is possible to not only survive, but be well in the most difficult of circumstances. The novel Love That Dog will set fire to their ambition and to their individual creative abilities as they see that even someone who believes himself a talentless underdog is able to create beautiful poetry.
