The personal and caring touch is what is key to deep learning for students. In so many cases, our students attend school and feel like nonpersons, or robots, or cogs in a giant wheel. Yet one person will cure cancer . . .one person will become President . . . or one person will develop a science that will benefit us all. They are ALL cared for and individual. The smallest effort to make a day special here or there . . .a granola bar, a kind word, or a listening ear, can change all of our lives.”

This classroom project was brought to life by Utah State Board of Education.

Despite the good efforts our cafeteria staff and administration do to prep students for the day, there are numerous students in my classes, in Special Ed., and in our halls that wander alone, have no location to call a 'port in the storm' and nowhere to grab a snack before school starts. My room is a haven . . . a port where they can get a granola bar, some words of encouragement, and in some cases, the breakfast they missed as they fall through the cracks. The students I benefit go through the entire day, and not just my Junior English classes, with a better attitude, and in some cases, the bare nutrition they need to focus on that first period of the day.
