Moving or fidgeting serves as a sensory outlet for many of my students. A fellow teacher and a mother of an autistic child described the need to move or fidget as “just like breathing to you or I". A variety of flexible seating options would provide the sensory outlet while helping them stay focused and engaged. There are many other benefits of flexible seating within the classroom. It allows students to make a choice. Providing students with a choice gives them agency. They develop communication and cooperation skills because choices have to be made about when and who is going to sit where. We recently moved to tables for learning and removed the desks from my room. While we still have traditional chairs, flexible seating would provide many benefits for my students. We learn and practice vocational and life skills that they can use in the workplace, in a supported work environment and in their everyday lives. Our classroom has an office and tech skills area, where they file, collate, shred, staple and more. An office sorting tray would complete the office and tech skills area. On Fridays, we have a Cooking with Class lesson. This is a favorite among the students. Each week I pick a sous chef and they help decide what we are going to make, they help prepare and explain what we are making and how we are making it. In addition to learning how to read a recipe, measure out ingredients and prepare a meal for themselves, they learn about nutritional values and healthy eating. The hotplate and utensils would provide my students the opportunity to learn/practice food preparation. A rolling cart would help my students in many of their jobs within the classroom or around the school.
