Because of our rural location and economic hardships, many of our students do not have access to the internet or they do not have access to the reliable internet. This has negatively impacted our students' ability to participate in distance learning in the past, and this challenge continues today. One of the many problems that I see in my fifth grade math class is the students' inability to complete math computation with automaticity. The students would have mastered many of these skills by working in the classroom with their teacher and fellow students. The teachers have encouraged the students to learn the facts at home, but, many factors, such as lack of materials, lack of internet, and lack of support, have impacted this process. I would like to use the materials to create math bags for the students to use in class and to check out for home. These bags would include flashcards, games, and materials to help students master math facts with automaticity. Learning and knowing their math facts is a simple skill, but it is an important skill for students to develop so that they can follow along during teaching time and be successful both inside and the classroom and out of school. It is one of the most fundamental skills a person can develop to be successful in math. My principal has approved this project.
