Finding My Way

Funded Aug 19, 2023

In todays society, we tend to rely on technology to navigate our way from one destination to another. My goal with these lessons were to enable the students in grades 1st through 5th to learn how to navigate there way from one location to another through physical maps.

All of the students were able to interact with the maps, learn how to read and locate information using the map key, and how to articulate directions using a Compass Rose.

Most of the activities were conducted as pairs, one student was the "driver" and the other was the "navigator". The students built social and communication skills while simultaneously learning how to locate information on the map such as landmarks, rivers, and types of roads. When working with maps from different countries the students noticed the different languages and types of roads (ferries and motorways).

The lessons were modified based on the students abilities, 1st verses 5th, but the primary goal was utilized throughout. All of the students were actively engaged and learning. The students enquiries were higher than I expected. One of the lower grade groups were very interested in how long (time oriented) the destination they navigated would take. This is definitely an activity that I will utilize each year.”
