As COVID-19 forced many schools to close for varying amounts of time, this also meant many students were not reading. Many students are reading below their grade level and lack the desire and self-discipline to read independently. The students who are on grade level seem to have lost the love of reading they had when they were younger. This lack of reading has caused a comprehension and vocabulary delay in students. Offering students a wide selection of books can help rebuild their love of reading. As students come back to school for longer periods of time and a love of reading is repaired, students will not only read at school, but at home as well. In our classroom we have independent reading days, and we also use any free time at the end of the class period for reading. Students complete an independent reading assignment each 9 weeks. They are able to choose any book that falls within 12 genre choices, but the goal of the assignment is for them to branch out and try new authors and genres they would not normally select. So each 9 weeks they select a different author and genre than they previously read. One of my favorite conversations to witness is when a student is browsing our classroom library and another student makes a recommendation or says, "Hey, that's actually a really good book, and I don't even like to read!" My project will add current high interest titles from a variety of authors representing many different cultures, as well as some literary classics. This project will add to our small classroom library with the organization it needs by adding another bookshelf, organization accessories, and fidget bands for students to use at their desk while reading or working.
