All of my kinder students love the drama center through dramatic play and interact with each other socially throughout the day. Learning how to manage emotions and play together is a huge part of the kindergarten curriculum. Due to the impact of Covid, kids are struggling more than ever with how to spark their imagination impact with peers and on something other than an Ipad.
My learning through play project will give us extra resources for social and emotional development but also our social studies, math, and reading skills at the front of their educational journey.
Currently, our class only has a kitchen and a doctor's kit for the dramatic play area. This funding would allow the purchase of additional social play and other items including animal care, grooming center, bakery, and grocery store. I'll be able to teach about community helpers such as a vet, baker, and hairdresser. Through play, I will teach the skill and they will be able to put it into practice. When they play that they're having to write down appointment times, handle pretend money and then interact with their peers. This covers so many Oklahoma standards. An example I love to use is a grocery store. I would love to have a grocery store with a cash register, and I set it out after we learn about money. They'll be able to apply what they're learning thanks to the Donors Choose Project.
Along with dramatic play items, there are math manipulatives such as a Lego table, 3D shape building manipulatives, puzzles, etc to help my kinders continue to build upon in our whole group lessons. Along with enriching our whole group lessons they are also developing self-confidence, social, cognitive, communication and resilience skills that will take them through their childhood and adulthood.
