In our increasingly global society, students have more tools to connect across the world than ever before. As we study the physical and cultural geography, we will also read these novels as a class in order to gain the depth and context of others. In order to help my students gain perspective and understanding of other cultures, I encourage them to read novels or nonfiction stories from the regions we study. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, I would love the opportunity to re-engage my students with the world around them. The pandemic has allowed them to experience the same situation as billions across the globe but under vastly different circumstances. This opens up opportunities for us to discuss how and why your geography matters, as well as reignite their curiosity about other peoples and cultures. A class set of a novel based in Africa will give my students an inside look at the struggles that young people went through during times of conflict in Sudan. In The Night Diary, students will be guided into Partition through the voice of a girl their age, as she navigates her new life. Understanding, empathy and awareness of other cultures will help them not only be more globally connected, but will also help them become more personally connected with those both similar and different from themselves.
