  • Middle School Atlas Aces

    Funded Aug 13, 2023

I wanted to take the time to let you know how appreciative we are for your generous donation to our classroom! My middle school students often struggle with learning about the world - often because their own world seems so small. Living in a small town in Oklahoma, they do not get a lot of exposure to other places and cultures. Their new atlases have opened up a whole new world!

We have been able to explore other regions, continents, and peoples. Students have dug into the history, demographics, and current issues around our globe. Additionally, we have been able to practice our graph/map reading skills. By reading charts and graphs to find information, we are improving our skills and preparedness for math, state testing, and the workforce.

Again, thank you for the generous donation to our classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Felton

  • Cultivating Commonalities Across the Globe

    Funded Feb 7, 2022

It is with sincere gratitude and excitement that I get the opportunity to thank you for contributing to my classroom project! My students last year benefited greatly from the novel journeys we went on. We were able to hear voices, stories and perspectives like never before. Even students who claimed to 'hate reading' were drawn into the story lines!

Moving forward to future student groups, we have built a curriculum around the class novels that will help make more connections between our world and theirs. I cannot wait to bring this exposure to complex historical events and situations.

Thank you again for bringing this to life in my classroom! My students and I are better for it.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Felton

In our increasingly global society, students have more tools to connect across the world than ever before. As we study the physical and cultural geography, we will also read these novels as a class in order to gain the depth and context of others. In order to help my students gain perspective and understanding of other cultures, I encourage them to read novels or nonfiction stories from the regions we study. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, I would love the opportunity to re-engage my students with the world around them. The pandemic has allowed them to experience the same situation as billions across the globe but under vastly different circumstances. This opens up opportunities for us to discuss how and why your geography matters, as well as reignite their curiosity about other peoples and cultures. A class set of a novel based in Africa will give my students an inside look at the struggles that young people went through during times of conflict in Sudan. In The Night Diary, students will be guided into Partition through the voice of a girl their age, as she navigates her new life. Understanding, empathy and awareness of other cultures will help them not only be more globally connected, but will also help them become more personally connected with those both similar and different from themselves.
