One of the biggest problems I've found at our school is that everything is very outdated. We are one of the oldest schools in our district dating back to the 60's and a good deal of our lab equipment has never been replaced. A fair share of the equipment is outdate and our not tools that are translatable to the college level. I feel that it's important to have tools in a lab that can be used efficiently and also translate as a reusable method in the future. The larger problem at hand is that our lab does not have certain necessary equipment to perform experiments for standard based learning. One of those tools is a calorimeter. This year we had to make calorimeters with styrofoam cups. While this method can somewhat get the job done, it does not teach students vital techniques that they will need to take to college. Many tools now are also able to translate data onto a computer. This would allow for students who are at home sick with Covid or isolating to view this information with the sending of an email from a peer. With this money I would be able to help our bright students explore and grow an interest for the sciences. We would be able to acquire lab equipment that is not now available in our lab. We would also be able to replace outdated equipment allowing for better lab practice and compression with techniques moving forward to college and career. Many of my students miss class due to Covid related issues and it has proven difficult to get them up to speed with the tools we have in our lab. Please consider my lab for this money so I can help give back to my students.
