Calm Down Classroom Kits
Funded Nov 2, 2022Thank you so much for your donation to my project! I am a school counselor in a rural community in Oklahoma. I serve two campuses in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 5th. I am currently working with my students to teach them how to regulate their emotions. When students are unable to do this, it causes disruptions to the learning environment, disciplinary issues, and sometimes the "domino effect" causing others to be emotional.
Your donation helped create "tool boxes" that I am calling "Cool Down Boxes". Each classroom has their very own box so that teachers have a ready to go resource for students to calm themselves as needed. This keeps them in the classroom, learning to take charge of their emotions, self-regulate and return to work. Students know how each "tool" in the box is meant to be used. There is also a flip book of reminders and other ideas (such as deep breathing techniques) that students may reference.
This is how it works. I present classroom instruction about recognizing emotions and coping skills to use. The students are taught how to utilize each item in the box. When they need a break they use their "Cool Down Spot" pass. The teacher speaks to the student to determine the issue and how long the student might need. The teacher sets a timer, and the student goes to the spot to cool down. When the timer goes off, the teacher discusses the situation with the student and they return to work. This is a win for all involved!
Thank you so much for your donations! They are helping my students have clearer minds so that they may learn as much as possible and reach their full potential!
Thank you!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Gammon
