Every student can learn, just not on the same day or the same way! My special education students learn differently than other students, have significant gaps in their foundational reading skills and due to missing out on crucial in person and hands on learning during the pandemic, those gaps have increased. Providing a variety of hands on learning material is crucial in developing their love for reading and closing the gaps such as using blending games, magic E flipboards, phonics dominos, phonics flash cards, CVC activity cards with blocks, decodable books and reading comprehension cubes.
To help my students learn amid the pandemic, I will use these hands-on manipulatives to close those gaps even faster in small group as well as having the students use them independently and also in pairs.
While students were out of school during the pandemic, their ability to sit and focus has been challenged. Many of my students have been diagnosed with ADHD so I am excited to try the fidget chair bands to put on the bottom of their desks and chairs to help with their focus. If they can focus better, their ability to learn will increase.
My students also have challenges with fine motor skills and small whiteboards with lines will help students to "have fun" practicing their letters instead of just with paper and pencil.
Numerous students have been diagnosed with dyslexia so to have a large variety of lesson plans and activities from Orton Gillingham is essential in helping those students increase their reading ability.
With all these amazing new games, resources, decodable books, white boards and flash cards, I would love to have a cabinet to store them in since I, unfortunately, do not have storage in my classroom.
