Many young children have not developed social skills and adaptive skills since the onset of the COVID-19 outbreak. This is a tragic result of isolation. Young children need to be social to develop many important skills like cooperation, problem-solving, endurance, turn-taking, sharing, and many more. Young children need more materials to peak their interest and help them stay engaged. Years ago, preschool classrooms could get by on fewer materials but now everything in my classroom is in a cleaning rotation. This means I need a larger variety of items to keep my students busy. This is just part of living in a pandemic. All items need to be easy to clean and durable to handle hundreds of routine cleanings. The most important element in my classroom is to keep playing. I want my students to build, paint, reconstruct, and redo. This is the time to develop the ability to keep going. At the young tender age of preschool, I want them to become comfortable in picking up the blocks and re-building. These are skills needed for times like these. Never give up and never stop laughing as you go about your day.
