In Utah 5th grade social studies, we learn about U.S. history. This includes the forming of our nation, our government, and what is required to be a good citizen. To do this we have chosen to form a classroom city. Great students make great citizens of our 5th grade city and all our students are wonderful! As part of our 5th grade city, students run for office, elect a peer council, perform classroom jobs to earn wages, and meet expectations for additional classroom money. When you work hard to either meet expectations or to exceed a goal that students set for themselves, it is nice to earn a reward. Classroom rewards are not necessary, but help to encourage grit! I want to not only renew classroom stock of rewards, but to give students the opportunity to create their own rewards; such as making buttons to sell at our classroom fairs. As part of our fairs, students can have a business to sell their wares to other peers, as well as to earn classroom money for themselves. This classroom society helps students to feel that they are in control of their goals, their ability to earn rewards, as well as the opportunity to learn the art of entrepreneurship.
