Each year, as a special ed reading class, we read and annotate a novel together. Once finished, the kids get to keep their novels. Because I teach 10th and 11th grade, this gives my kids two novels a year of their very own by the time they leave high school. They absolutely love this experience and pride of ownership in these books. I enjoy how, not only are the students getting to keep a book, but, they are beginning to build their own library or passing their book along to brother or sister or friend to read also. It's just an overall great experience for me as a teacher and for the students.
