With the constant improvement of sewing skills and learning required for my various sewing classes, they need specific materials that are capable of holding up to regular usage after being turned into completed projects. I not only want to have my students learn these skills, but I want them to use them to make an impact on the community. We have nursing homes that offer care and rehabilitation services to many elderly and by having students create needed items for them, they are putting forth their best effort and skills to be able to share their finished wheelchair and walker bags, as well as lap quilts with the residents of these homes. In addition to these service projects, students will be sewing projects of their own to further build upon their sewing skills. Aside from sewing projects, I have requested items for various activities that align with our state standards. These include painting to better understand the color wheel and how color works, as well as how there are various dyeing processes within the textile industry and how specific textiles require different dyes and processes. We will be dyeing infant clothing that will be used in the future for child development classes that learn about infants and their needs from basics of food and clothing to more specifics of love and stability.
