I'm so excited to use the resources in my Donors Choose project to help my students gain an understanding (and love) of reading. Many of my kindergarteners did not have the opportunity to go to preschool due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some students are practicing their letters, some are practicing sight words, and some are starting to sound out and blend words. I have been given the opportunity to learn about the Science of Reading through the LETRS course. This course has taught me how to effectively teach students how to read and make it fun! I love to make fun and engaging games for my students. The Epson Eco Tank printer will help me to print the games that I create. The Science of Reading has students start by learning their letters, and focusing on the formation of the mouth. The games that I have added will help my students learn their letters (in an engaging and fun way), and the handheld mirrors will help them see the formation of their mouth as they produce the letter. I have added magnetic wands to help my students "tap, map, graph" new words they are learning. I plan to use color printing reusable mats for next year, and printing decodable books. The decodable books are also great for students to read at home. I have included sight word games to help my students learn their sight words, and recognize them at a quicker pace. I have found students are more eager to learn when the concepts are fun!
