  • Back to School 2023-24 English Class.

    Funded Sep 9, 2023

Thank you so much. With your donations, my students will have the tools needed for a successful year. My students will be thrilled to have these supplies and use them during this challenging year. Thank you so much. My students thank you as well. They are truly

    Very appreciative. Yay!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Rivera

  • Back to School Supplies!

    Funded Aug 7, 2022

I want to thank you for your generous donation. The students were so happy when they received their supplies. The notebooks and folders heled many of the students stay organized. When they saw the markers they were truly pleased with them.

The students are able to use their supplies as they are learning a new language. The mini notebook comes in handy when they are writing their weekly vocabulary words. The markers are being used for their flag and country's project.

This year has been much easier for myself and for my students. They are doing amazingly, and love learning and using the supplies given to them.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Rivera

  • Supplies Needed

    Funded Feb 1, 2022

This was a continuation form the "Create a Hero Workshop" To the donor that donated, I want to sincerely thank you for your generosity. These students were amazing.

Thank you very much for your donations. The difference you made in these students' lives is immeasurable. The books, drawing pencils, and sketch pads really helped bring out their creativity. They worked very hard creating their own comic book hero. They read different stories of real life heroes like, Barack Obama, and Malala Yousafzai. They also thought of heroes they are with everyday, such as: parents, teachers, doctors, firemen, and others.

Your donation was accepted with so much joy. You truly made a difference in their lives.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Rivera

Children struggle finding their place in society. It is even more difficult for my English Learning students to assimilate into society and fit in with their peers. Exposing children to literature with culturally diverse characters is a way to make children feel connected to others like them and also gives them someone they can look to as a role model. The popular superheroes we see today have little connection with children of color. I have chosen Miles Morale: Spider-Man as the book of the week. By day Miles Morales is your average Puerto Rican/African American boy who must deal with his family, school, friends, and fighting crime. Reading this novel will help my students make a connection to a popular character. During Acceleration Academy in February 2022, we will be working on creating a hero. Students will also read some excerpt from former President Barack Obama's speech, Malala Yousafzai, and "The Hero with a Thousand Faces", by Joseph Campbell. The goal is for them to create a superhero that is like them. Write a backstory, and hopefully draw some sketches, or even their own comic strip. This class will also help prepare them for the MCAS, by making comparison with different forms of literature.
