As a new teacher in College and Career Awareness, I am developing a curriculum with real-life work experiences. Teaching students to use recording equipment helps them not only to learn to work together in a group project but also to develop soft skills. Students can develop communication and problem-solving skills through various assignments. The benefits of these activities will benefit their education, careers, and lives. Each student will learn how to set up, record, and take care of the video recording equipment as we explore careers in communications, journalism, music, film making, acting, playwriting, animation, and interviewing.
Students will host the interviews and direct the recording of presentations. I have invited guest speakers to visit my class, but if a few students were absent, then they missed the presentation. A solution is to have small groups of students record one guest speaker of their choosing and only record the presentation once. Then post their project to an online classroom for classmates to view. We can invite more speakers and have a greater variety of career experiences. We will create our own Career Library and add to it each year. As we explore various careers throughout the year, students can reference the videos in the Career Library they created. Students will be more invested in the project. They will be actively participating rather than sitting and listening. They will be interviewing parents, family members, or guests from the community. Students will learn in a hands-on environment. Students will no longer miss out on these special experiences due to absences or Covid related illnesses. Through these experiences, students are gaining valuable knowledge and creating a feeling of inclusion for our classroom. Our classroom will be a place where all ideas can come to life.
