As the school counselor of an elementary school my job is very unique. My job is never the same from one day to the next. I am asked to help with many different situations and am always on my toes. You can find me in my office talking with parents one minute and sitting under a desk helping a student in crisis the next. Because my job is all about feelings, this means I am constantly doing things differently to fit the needs of my students. COVID has greatly impacted our students mental health. We see more anxiety and fear at school. More students are nervous to be away from their families and panic at times when sickness is talked about. Because of this, I am constantly looking for a variety of items to have on hand to help me get to the bottom of a students behavior / emotions, finding what motivates them, learning how they communicate with adults, and finding ways to connect with them. Some students can open up easily with me to discuss what is troubling them and others do it as we play legos, or color a picture of their favorite animal. Having these items will help me connect with my students, calm them in times of crisis or escalation, and most important they will be a tool to help me learn more about them. I LOVE MY JOB, even when it's difficult, and I believe the items requested will help me in assisting the variety of students I serve.
