I think that in an ideal world we are intrinsically motivated. But in reality, we all can use a push sometimes to be our best. At our school, which is primarily composed of student-athletes, we are result oriented more than most. Recently we have put together some recognition programs for students who do well in the class room - measured not always in high scores, but also in making progress - and also for those who are fostering the culture we desire. One of kindness and responsibility, leadership and ownership. The Hydro Flasks will be high value prizes that can potentially help motivate an otherwise struggling student. Many of our students are economically disadvantaged, so they don't always get a chance to buy things like Hydro Flasks for themselves. A water bottle for many of our students is an expense that they can't afford. I would love to be able to give prizes that our students can't get for themselves. These outside motivators can be the nudge our students need to make that last study session really count, or take an extra read over a passage to make sure they did a good job. I am all for helping them however we can, and if an extrinsic motivator gets them over the hump, than I think we should do it.
