Special Education students require extra support and accommodations to access the general education curriculum. As a Special Education math teacher, all of my students need accommodations, but all of them need and respond to accommodations in a unique way. I work with students who may need extra emotional, social, or academic support, or some combination. To more effectively tailor my instruction to each student, I want to do more customized, differentiated instruction in smaller groups. Differentiated instruction benefits students by supporting them at their current level, according to their unique needs. The supplies I am requesting are tools to help me give differentiated instruction. A paraeducator has recently been added as a helper in my classroom. We're looking for ways to collaborate. With a rolling whiteboard, the paraeducator would have a helpful tool to move from group to group to give struggling students extra, customized support. In the meantime, I would be able to focus on whole group instruction, allowing the rest of the class to access lesson plans and progress along the curriculum. A rolling whiteboard would be a simple way to better use teaching resources, and students would benefit from individualized attention given during group instruction. Students benefit from having multiple ways to respond in class. I have small white boards for each student now, but we are low on markers, and we do not have erasers. New colorful markers would give students more opportunities to respond to instruction in fun ways. Students would also benefit from post-it notes as we start lessons on simplifying expressions and solving equations. It is easy to move and group numbers and variables when they are written on different colored post-its. It's a helpful focus tool.
