According to the Nation’s Report Card released on October 30, 2019, the average reading scores for fourth and eighth grade students declined between 2017 and 2019. In fact, since the NAEP (National Association of Educational Progress) began almost thirty years ago, there has been no progress for the lowest performing readers. Unfortunately, the predicted impact of COVID-19 on students paints an even grimmer picture. We know that strong reading levels at the end of kindergarten set up children to be more successful in the rest of their schooling. Clearly, our literacy instruction in kindergarten is of the utmost importance. By increasing oral language opportunities in our classrooms, we give children the foundation for literacy. These hands-on materials will promote oral language use and help develop the vocabulary being used in both academic and social settings. Strong oral language foundation is the precursor to print literacy. These materials will help to boost oral language and vocabulary skills thus preparing kindergarteners for a successful school experience.
