I am a Dual Language Immersion teacher. That means I teach in a foreign language (Portuguese). I have two 1st grade classes and I only speak Portuguese to my students. These materials will help in many strategies I use daily to make myself and the content understandable to first graders. In Dual Language Immersion we create a lot of classroom displays to provide background knowledge. That is important so students know where to find words, sentence frames, and ideas for writing and reading. In my classroom I have a lot of words on the walls. They need to be laminated and very clear so students can use them to speak and write. Every day we add new words related to the content (Math, Portuguese Literacy, Social Studies and Science). Another resource very valuable we use is the plastic folders. Each student has their own folder where they practice writing and math using dry markers. I like to have the papers inside a plastic cover because that way can be done over and over again until our goals are met. Students have individual goals to reach throughout the school year. The main goal for Math is being able to add and subtract within 20 and the goals for Portuguese Language Arts are reading, writing and speaking at the novice low level determined by the State of Utah. It is important to say that my students are not native Portuguese speakers. My students need to be validated constantly because they work hard and they need to know that their effort is important. I appreciate the opportunity to have what I need to help my students to succeed in class.
