My school does not have a library. Prior to the few donations I've received this year, students were almost never able to read a novel together in class with each student having their own book. It is wonderful that we can access PDFs of novels when it is necessary. But, I am a firm believer that students can benefit from using physical books. They can connect with the story in a tangible way if they hold the binding in their fingers, smell the pages as they picture. I want them to find ways to connect with the characters and themes without the mediation of a screen. And, I want a classroom experience where together we can commune with the words and not get distracted by the many places the screens could take us alternatively. Additionally, I want to infuse these students' education with hands-on creativity. I teach one photo/film class. And, of course, much of what we can do is digital. But, I do have access to one vintage Polaroid camera. And, I was hoping my students would be able to take Polaroids and get the experience of a physical creative process outside of just the digital realm. Again, I'm hoping to break the students away from screens being the only vehicle for their creativity and expression. Looking through the lens of a vintage polaroid, I hope these students can document their unique experience at our school and on our farm.
