Students at our high school spend a portion of most of their school days on our 5 acre school farm. The farm serves as a learning laboratory and supplement to classroom activities as well as a source for nature therapy and environmental connection. For years we've struggled to create a welcoming outdoor classroom which teachers and students can use readily for structured learning. Our "outdoor classroom" has previously served as a pig barn, storage unit, and dump site for unclaimed refuse. In recent years, we've removed the animal pens we opened the building up to function more like an open- air pavilion. Since making those changes we've been able to host our bi-annual farm festivals, job fairs, and various other public events on the farm. Last spring we even hosted our school prom out there. The problem is the building is still quite "farmy". As teachers more frequently take the opportunity to bring students outside into the fresh air for Covid-friendly learning opportunities, we're realizing we'd like to make our outdoor classroom cleaner and more welcoming. With student help, we plan to paint the inside of the classroom so that it looks less like the pig barn it used to be. We want to smooth away many years of evidence of flies, livestock activity, and student graffiti.
