There are many stories and events that are sometimes overlooked when teaching American History. By using book projects and historical fiction stories, students can identify with figures or characters from that time period and better understand the experiences they went through. It will give a deeper understanding of the struggles and victories, as well as help us learn about historical events through story form. As we dive into books about different people and events in history, we can look deeper at how different ethnic groups played a role in the growth of the US, and how these groups were affected. The US is made of ethnic groups such as Native Americans, Asian, African, and European groups. These groups were all affected by the growth of the US, in positive and negative ways. By learning about famous figures, minority groups, civil rights movements, and even the tragic mistakes of our past, students will grow to understand the role of The People in building, changing, and improving the story of the United States.
