Many of my students do not know why their parents or grandparents came to the states. Many of my students do not understand the visions or dreams that motivated their elders to leave their homes for a better life. Many of my students do not know the language of their culture nor their mother tongue. Visions and dreams of their elders have brought them here; technology and creativity of my students will bring them closer to their families. With the protocols of physical distancing in place, many of our schools have not had a field trip. The Oculus will allow my students to be virtually transported to a place free of covid. My class project will consist of my students asking their parents or grandparents about where they came from. They will also ask why they came to the US and what dreams or visions motivated them to move. We will then have a week of field trips as each student will have a 5 minute virtual walk through of their ancestral land. Then they will use the iPad and stylus to write a journal of how they felt walking through their cultural lands and reflect upon why their families moved. Or they can write about what their cultural land would look like in the future and what would motivate them to move to another place. I would like them to write with the stylus as many of our students only know how to type with their thumbs. I would also like to have them do it on the iPad so that they can save it quickly and integrate technology into my classroom.
