Our middle school currently serves over 700 students. More than three quarters of the students come from low-income households, 18% of students have disabilities, and 14% are English Language Learners (ELLs). As an ENL teacher, I work with my students to support them while they become proficient in English. Many of my students have recently immigrated from other countries and they are struggling to catch up with their peers. Since many of my students come from low-income homes, they lack exposure to technology. One might ask, why is technology important in education? Technology is everywhere nowadays, entwined in almost every part of our culture - It affects how we live, work, play, and most importantly how we learn. Integrating technology into the classroom is an effective way to connect with students of all learning styles and support them as they learn a new language. Students, especially those with special needs, learn in a variety of ways. Technology is just another avenue that they can explore. Integrating technology in education helps students to stay engaged. With tight budgets, it becomes difficult to integrate technology into ENL lessons. iPads would be beneficial to ENL lessons in many ways. The iPad would be used to conduct independent research, something that we, as adults, do in our everyday lives. However, our students often have difficulty researching due to lack of exposure to technology in their everyday lives. An iPad also provides access to a variety of apps, books, and educational videos, in their native language. Students that have difficulty communicating verbally can also use the iPad to communicate effectively with teachers and peers.
