The past two years have been stressful and anxiety-provoking for so many people. Covid-19 changed the way we do so many things, including the way we get an education. Most adults have the skills to manage the changes and added stress. But many students are finding the constant instability and worry more than they can handle. I work directly with ninth graders who need extra mental and/or emotional support. The majority of students with whom I meet say that they feel anxious, stressed or worried most of the time. Students are having a hard time being successful at school because so much is on their "emotional plate." My purpose in proposing this project is to obtain Virtual Reality headsets on which students can learn and practice mindfulness and meditation. One passion that most of my students share is playing video games. By providing the headset and the appropriate learning activities, students will gain the skills and tools necessary to navigate their emotions. Because of the virtual reality aspect, learning the skills can be fun and something that the students look forward to instead of an uncomfortable or embarrassing lesson or discussion. The funding of this project would greatly benefit the students who are struggling emotionally during this challenging time.
